On the road - part one

So I've been on the road basically since July 2 and so much has happened. It all started with our regional convention in Stockholm July 3-5, and the very next day my friend Sarah and I flew to NYC and picked up our rental car that would take us across the US. Finally the day that we had been waiting for was here!

We stayed with some of Sarah's friends in New Jersey, and then we all took off to the Niagara Falls. After a few relaxing days in a house in Fillmore, NY, we hit the road again. Since we aimed at the tourist attractions and the national parks in the northwestern part of the US we kind of sped through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska. In Chicago we spent a few hours. Surprisingly we managed to fill them well with biking and sightseeing.

Next big stop was Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. It was impressive seeing the faces in the mountain from many different angles. Obviously the challenge was to take a non-mainstream photo of the old presidents, such as making it seem that you were picking the nose of one of them, but I actually forgot to do that! Shame on me. Close to Mount Rushmore is also Badlands National Park, where we were caught off guard by the heat.

On our way to Yellowstone we stopped in a tiny town in Montana called Broadus. Since we were in desperate need to do our laundry we went to a laundromat, and guess what we found there? A Watchtower and an Awake. Naturally. In Broadus we also experienced a mighty thunderstorm.

Beartooth Pass in Montana is one of the most beautiful roads I have ever seen. The mountains, valleys and glaciers form the most perfect sceneries to enjoy while driving up and down the narrow, winding road. In hindsight, we should have planned this part of the trip more carefully because we ended up not having as much time as we wished for, but hey. There's always a next time. Yellowstone was stunning and amazingly diverse. Waterfalls, mountains, forest, glaciers and geyshers were just some of the things we could enjoy. Despite the fact that we only explored this beautiful national park for 1,5 days we saw very much.

After Yellowstone we moved on to Utah. Here we took a boat ride on the Colorado River and enjoyed the red rocks of Arches National Park from below. The next day we hiked in the same park. It was around 30 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) and we brought four bottles of water each. Again, gorgeous sights!

Falling into the classic tourist traps is part of being on the road. Also, the idea of crossing as many states as possible was also a contributing factor to why we ended up standing in line for 30 minutes in scorching heat in order to take our picture at the Four Corner Monument. Supposedly, this is where the four states Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico meet. Not really true, but still fun. When moving on to see Monument Valley the weather had changed quite a bit, so it was all swept in fog and rain, which made it impossible to take good pictures. However it looked nice in reality.

And here ends the first part of our roadtrip.
